Big Brothers Big Sisters Executive Director to be Awarded Presidential Medal
Steven Beck, Executive Director of the Big Brother Big Sister Foundation, has been
awarded the Presidential Medal of Volunteerism for 2011-12. The medal will be
presented by President Obama at a special ceremony at the White House.
Mr. Beck is receiving the honor in recognition of his thirty years with non-profits,
educational and volunteer organizations, which include Big Brothers Big Sisters, the
Massachusetts & Health Care Association, the May Institute and the National Autism Center.
During his tenure with the BBBS Foundation, the organization enjoyed a record setting
year in 2010, has become recognized as a national leader in the in-kind donation
industry and has been honored with numerous community awards. On November
16, Steve and Foundation staff members will accept an Employer of the Year Award
from the National Clubhouse Employment Project at a ceremony on Capitol Hill in
Washington. The Foundation partners with clubhouses to provide gainful employment
for developmentally disabled adults, a program that has served as a model for similar
non-profit organizations across the country.
Mr. Beck also serves as an Advising Partner for the CREW (Community Recyclers
of Electronic Waste), an electronics recycling program that has netted more than
$3,000,000 for public school fine arts and music programs, local community service
centers and other valuable causes in the last six years. He is the editor of Development
Directions, a newsletter that provides information and reviews of services, products and
software for the development/fundraising industry. The newsletter moves online in
December.
The Boston Celtics and the Massachusetts Lottery Commission recognized Steve's work
with Big Brothers Big Sisters by presenting him with the "Heroes Among Us" award
last December. His work has also garnered awards and special recognition from the
Massachusetts House of Representatives, Standard & Poor’s and the National Music
Educators Association. A writer in his spare time, Steve’s articles have appeared in consumer and trade
publications, Care Nursing, Hospital News and Health Care Review. His children's book, The Hotel
Bradbury, was selected as a reading title for the national "All Books for Children" reading campaign.
Mr. Beck lives in Marshfield, MA, with his wife and two sons. Both he and his wife
Nancy are graduates of Eastern Nazarene College (1979) in Quincy, MA
